The Sikkim Himalayan Academy is a school that offers education and living opportunities to underprivileged children from remote areas of Sikkim. The school is funded through private donations raised in Europe and North America. Local teachers and administrators are hired to operate the school and foreign volunteers are recruited to assist the staff. About half of the students live at the school and meals are provided for all students. Parents of the students are not required to pay for the school, instead donations of food and or services are given when available. The curriculum at the school is based on the standards of the Inidian education system, however local culture and languages are also emphasized.
