Amas Musical Theatre

Amas Musical Theatre is dedicated to the creation, development and professional production of new American musicals through the celebration of equity and minority perspectives, the emergence of new artistic talent, and the training and encouragement of underserved young people in the New York area.  

Amas (Latin for "you love") is New York’s award-winning pioneer in diversity and multiculturalism in the performing arts. Amas was founded in 1968 by African-American actress/producer Rosetta LeNoire (1911-2002), who saw musical theatre as a collaborative art form uniquely suited to bring individuals and communities together. The 1970s Broadway and touring hit "Bubbling Brown Sugar" was her inspiration, and Amas emerged as a pioneering exponent of equity and multiculturalism in theatre. In 1999, LeNoire was awarded the National Medal of Arts. 

Under the leadership of Artistic Producer Donna Trinkoff since 1994, the Amas scope now embraces many ethnicities and communities-at-risk, including those defined by sexual or gender orientation, and many other differentiators that trigger exclusion or persecution. Our focus on musical development provides writers and composers of work that champions inclusion and equity with resources, expertise, process, and tools.
