Mobile Baykeeper is the voice of the Mobile Bay Watershed and our coastal communities.
We exist to advocate for the watershed and Coastal Alabama, protecting clean water, clean air, and healthy communities.
The Mobile Bay Watershed encompasses 65% of the land area for the state of Alabama, along with portions of Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee. It is a vast network of over 250 separate waterways, including rivers, bays, creeks, bayous, lakes, cutoffs, branches, and sloughs. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta that feeds the Bay is a complex network of old growth cypress and lush marshlands; it’s one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the continent, known as “North America’s Amazon.” Alabama’s sugar sand beaches are the basis of a nearly $15 Billion tourism economy. A healthy watershed ensures a growing and vibrant community, a high quality of life, and a resilient economy. We exist to make sure that the watershed is protected from pollution and continues to provide vital services to our quality of life, health, and economy.
We solve pollution problems.
We thoroughly research the environmental issues across our watershed that impact public health and our quality of life. Armed with detailed information, we communicate our findings to our community and invested stakeholders. Using our expertise and the input from our community, we find solutions that protect our Bay and all those who live, work, and play across Coastal Alabama.
We build relationships with elected officials as well as business, industry, and agency leaders, knowing that without their engagement we cannot grow responsibly. When we identify problems, we reach out directly to collaborate and implement solutions. We hold leaders accountable to the communities dependent upon their leadership, either through cooperation or through the rule of law. Early engagement with regional planners helps us safeguard our community and future generations.
We educate our fellow citizens about Coastal Alabama’s waterways and the impacts we as individuals have on our natural resources. Empowering citizens of all ages means arming them with the tools and knowledge they need to take responsibility for their local environment. Our broad and diverse member base is invested in preserving the Mobile Bay Watershed and our coastal communities, for today and for decades to come.
We are vigilant protectors of our watershed, committed to accuracy in all we do.
In every community member we see someone who needs, deserves, and could potentially invest in a clean Mobile Bay Watershed and healthy coastal communities. We view industry, corporations, utilities, and other permit holders not as polluters, but as potential collaborators for solutions. We are direct, honest, and cooperative, knowing that we all have at least one thing in common: a dependence on clean water.
Mobile Baykeeper is part of Waterkeeper Alliance, a water-focused environmental alliance founded in 1999, of which there are now more than 300 organizations and affiliates around the world.
