The mission of the Global Disaster Immediate Response Team (DIRT) is to fill the void that exists between the time of a disaster occurrence and that of the traditional response effort. The organization has operated based on this premise since its creation following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Global DIRT utilizes the small unit leadership model of special forces, combining specialists from a range of fields including special rescue fire departments, emergency medical services, trauma physicians and nurses, and the military, to respond to short term emergencies and the long term ramifications of disasters. Since 2010, Global DIRT has responded to a variety of emergencies across the world, ranging from flooding to radiation response and monitoring in countries such as Haiti, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Japan.
