I was a bike activist in NYC for many years, provided a home to bike messengers, pedicabs (I started the business in NYC in 1994), Time's Up environmental organization and the Critical Mass monthly rides. I am building prototypes of 21st century pedicabs to replace the Colonial-era flavored 19th Century versions of them which are currently used.

The Climate Crisis demands that we make more appropriate means of getting around, and do it soon. One of the best available opportunities to provide relief here is smaller, urban-based, multi-modal vehicles, to safely and comfortably carry persons, goods and wheelchairs, propelled by human and solar/electric power, around modest distances. 

Ideally this can be done by encouraging a variety of individuals and institutions, on the most local basis. to embrace this task, to begin designing these conveyances, for pleasure and purpose. Building unique tricycles out of the endless supply of discarded two-wheel bikes can be the work of artists and mechanics, designers and carpenters, welders and seamstresses. This can be done in the most creative spirit.  Localities can use their own networks to organize and motivate educational and other resources to participate. Crayons and CAD drawings can all be welcome. 

This is a relatively simple task at this point. It has two components. One is research and the other outreach.

To contact those parties and offer them the suggestion that they begin, and incentivize, projects in their locality.

www.AMovement.org is the home of this idea. The current presentation is very rough, does not yet make explicit how to engineer this process or provide a list of resources. Over time, this will become a place for designs to be exhibited and participants to contact one another and gain access to available resources.
