Buena Vista Community Institute

The Buena Vista Community Institute (BVCI) is the social justice arm of the Buena Vista United Methodist Church (BVUMC). Over the last 25 years BVCI/BVUMC has advocated for and achieved more Asian teachers and administrators in the Alameda Unified School District, assisted in the formation of Alameda's Multicultural Community Center, founded Renewed Hope Housing Advocates and continues advocacy for affordable housing and tenant protection ordinances, advocates for disability rights and provided a daily gathering and activity space for Helping Hands, advocates for human rights in the Philippines, and provides support for a village in Palestine. BVUMC is a 125 year old church that welcomes people of all races and gender identities. Its mission statement is "BVUMC is a welcoming, multi-generational community of faith open to all. Our mission is to be a spiritual and healing place to individuals to develop and deepen a growing relationship with God through Jesus Christ; to nurture loving ties within the congregation that embraces family, heritage, and diversity; and live out our Christian faith to our local and global communities through prayer, service, and social justice.
