  • Sobre Nós

La Isla Foundation is a policy and public health nonprofit/NGO based in León, Nicaragua. Established in 2008, La Isla Foundation is named after a small community in northwestern Nicaragua where so many sugarcane workers have perished from an epidemic of chronic kidney disease of unknown cause (CKDu) that the community has become commonly known as "La Isla de las Viudas" or, "The Isle of Widows."

La Isla Foundation exists to support the health and safety rights of sugarcane workers throughout Central America who are suffering from this epidemic. Through a combination of both public health and legal research and intervention, our purpose is to end CKDu once and for all, and to provide the necessary support to affected workers and their families as they seek to rebuild their lives.
