    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    We are seeking a hands-on and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to manage the financial health and long-term sustainability of the organization. The CFO will provide financial leadership while actively managing and overseeing the day-to-day financial operations in compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, GAAP, and funding source requirements. This role requires both operational management such as directly overseeing journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting, and strategic financial leadership to ensure fiscal responsibility, risk management, and the organization’s financial sustainability.

    OBJECTIVES OF THE ROLE:

    • Provide financial leadership in strategic planning, budgeting, and reporting to support the organization’s mission and goals.
    • Actively manage and oversee financial operations, including cash management, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting, ensuring compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and funding source requirements;
    • Drive the financial strategy of the organization, offering insights to the executive team on key financial decisions, long-term sustainability, and risk management;
    • Develop and implement best practices for financial management, grant compliance, and operational efficiency across the organization including assessing system upgrades as needed.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Strategic Leadership:

    • Partner with the CEO and executive team to develop and execute the financial strategy that supports the organization’s mission and ensures long-term sustainability;
    • Provide financial input on key decisions, including grant opportunities, investments, leases, insurance, and major contracts;
    • Lead the development of long-term financial plans, including multi-year budgeting, capital structure, and investment management;
    • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to communicate the organization’s financial performance, sustainability, and opportunities for growth;
    • Analyze economic trends and internal operations, identifying opportunities for cost reduction, process improvement, and revenue generation;
    • Assist in the development of fundraising and grant strategies to maximize financial support for the organization;
    • Manage risk by overseeing the organization’s liabilities, insurance policies, investments, and ensuring proper capital structure management to support financial stability.

    Operational Management and Compliance:

    • Actively manage and oversee daily financial operations, including the preparation, review, and approval of journal entries, cash management, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger accounting, ensuring timely and accurate financial transactions;
    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, GAAP, and specific requirements from funding sources, including government agencies, foundations, and private donors;
    • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, ensuring that all reports comply with GAAP and meet the requirements of external funding sources;
    • Lead and directly participate in the annual audit process, coordinating with external auditors and ensuring that all financial documentation is accurate and compliant with regulatory standards;
    • Monitor grant and contract compliance, ensuring that all expenditures are properly documented and reported in line with funder requirements.
    • Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard the organization’s financial assets and ensure accountability to donors and grantors;
    • Manage and oversee the implementation and maintenance of financial IT systems, ensuring that all systems are efficient, compliant, and scalable for future growth;
    • Work closely with program managers and development staff to develop project budgets, ensure compliance with grant requirements, and allocate funds across programs effectively.

    Nonprofit Financial Management:

    • Ensure the organization’s financial management practices comply with IRS regulations, GAAP, and industry standards for nonprofits, including proper handling of restricted funds and compliance with grant agreements;
    • Prepare and review financial reports for grant proposals and ensure proper reporting to funders on the use of grant fund;
    • Oversee and actively participate in the preparation of key nonprofit-specific reports, such as Form 990, CHAR 500, and other required filings;
    • Regularly review and enhance financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with funding sources and regulatory requirements;
    • Manage organizational insurance policies and investments, ensuring that both are aligned with the organization’s financial goals and risk management practices.

    Team Leadership and Development:

    • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, ensuring that they follow nonprofit accounting standards and best practices;
    • Actively manage the performance and development of finance team members, overseeing their work on journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting to ensure accuracy and compliance;
    • Oversee hiring, development, and retention of finance staff, ensuring the team’s structure and capabilities align with the organization’s growth and strategic goals;
    • Provide technical financial guidance to the finance team and program staff to ensure accurate budgeting, financial reporting, and grant compliance;
    • Conduct regular performance reviews and professional development opportunities for finance team members to ensure continued growth and efficiency.

    Sanctuary Model:

    • Effectively use and practice Sanctuary Models tools; safety plans, community meetings, psycho-educational groups, team meetings, red flags reviews, and self-care in the program to create a non-violent and trauma sensitive culture.
    • Promote and model the core values of Providence House Mission (Compassion, Non-Violence, Hospitality, and Community) and the Seven Sanctuary Model Commitments to create a non-violent and trauma sensitive culture.
    • Integrate the Sanctuary Model SELF (Safety, Emotional Management, Loss and Future) framework into daily practice to ensure quality care and an effective work environment.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field (required); CPA or MBA (preferred).
    • Proven experience as a CFO or in a senior financial management role within a nonprofit organization.
    • In-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including GAAP, fund accounting, grant compliance, and risk management.
    • Experience managing both strategic financial planning and hands-on financial operations, including journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting.
    • Strong understanding of cash management, financial reporting, insurance, investments, and compliance with funding source requirements.
    • Experience working with restricted funds, government contracts, and grant compliance.
    • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse teams and communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

    WORK SCHEDULE:

    The Chief Financial Officer is a full-time, salaried position. Generally, the hours worked will be weekdays 9:00am-5:00pm, or at a mutually agreed upon schedule. The role requires occasional evening and/or weekend work. This role requires an in-office presence at our 703 Lexington Avenue, Brooklyn headquarters with the ability to work remotely one day per week. Travel to various agency-based locations and/or potential sites for future housing will be required. Reimbursement for mileage expenses to locations beyond the initial worksite or MetroCard’s for travel to off-site locations will be provided.

    FLEXIBLE REMOTE WORK STATUS:

    This position is deemed able to work remotely on a flexible basis as it is a ‘non-essential’ position based on the job description. Flexible remote work means working from home or from a remote location during the employee’s normal work hours for a flexible period of time and can be changed and rescinded at any time. Employee will be required to work at their work location as required as flexible remote work arrangements require initial and ongoing approval of supervisor. Compensation, benefits, work status will not change due to remote work status.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS:

    The salary range for this position is $150K-$175k. Paid time off benefits include: 14 paid holidays, 4 weeks of vacation, 3 personal days, 12 sick days, early closure on Fridays proceeding Monday holidays, and a day off annually in recognition of your Birthday. Health and Wellness benefits include: medical, dental, vision, prescription coverage, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Other benefits include: a monthly health stipend (at the agency’s discretion), 403(B), commuter benefits, and paid professional development.
