    About the Beverly-Vermont Community Land Trust

    The Beverly-Vermont Community Land Trust (BVCLT) is a membership-based nonprofit organization that specializes in community-controlled governance and stewardship of land for working-class communities of color in Koreatown and the surrounding neighborhoods. 

    BVCLT's mission is to build community power to keep working class communities of color in their homes and neighborhoods through permanent affordability and democratic community ownership in Koreatown and the surrounding transit-oriented neighborhoods in Los Angeles by:

    • advocating for the decommodification of land and removing land permanently from the speculative housing market, 
    • creating just, equitable and ecological housing developments and alternative community ownership models, and
    • serving as an incubator for member-led programs and campaigns through centering the leadership of those most impacted by gentrification, displacement, and racist, extractive housing policies.

    About the Director of Resident & Land Stewardship Role 

    BVCLT is led by a horizontal leadership structure by its board and staff. The Director of Resident & Land Stewardship will be the one of co-director to BVCLT’s staff collective, and will collaborate with the other staff to manage BVCLT's day-to-day operations and participate in developing democratic governance structures guiding the growth of the organization.

    The Director of Resident & Land Stewardship will primarily focus on resident engagement, capacity building, and caretaking of The White House Place Learning Garden. They will serve as a direct liaison with residents and create processes to support residents in collective management of their homes. They will spearhead property management, capacity building for residents, housing cooperative development, and compliance of garden programming. The Director of Resident & Land Stewardship may also work in coalition spaces to share best practices and resources on housing cooperatives development, resident capacity building, and property maintenance. 

    Scope of Work 

    Resident Engagement & Capacity Building (35%)

    • Build and strengthen relationships with residents across all BVCLT properties. 
    • Build relationships across the different BVCLT properties and affirm residents' understanding and connection to BVCLT’s mission. 
    • Creation of tenant councils or decision making bodies across BVCLT properties and engage residents in care of the property. 
    • Build the capacity of tenants or community members in order to care for BVCLT properties. 
    • Development and implementation of ownership models and/or collective decision models across BVCLT properties (ie - zero equity housing cooperatives, limited equity housing cooperatives, tenant councils, etc).
    • Provide residents with support to resources when needed.  
    • Lead and coordinate tours within BVCLT properties. 
    • Connect residents to other BVCLT programming and organizing efforts. 
    • Develop programming for residents based on identified needs.
    • Lead or coordinate conflict resolution among residents.

    Property Management & Asset Management (35%)

    • Develop internal and contracted supportive services needed for BVCLT properties.
    • Develop and implement a long term property management plan for BVCLT properties that includes resident decision making. 
    • Incubate a resident and/or community property management project. 
    • Lead the management of BVCLT properties and coordination of contractors prior to building residents’ capacity .
    • Asset management on all BVCLT properties when under the organization's care. 
    • Coordinate with the rehabilitation team and general contractors for the rehabilitation of buildings when projects are going through rehabilitation. 

    Garden Compliance and Financing (10%)

    • Legal and financial compliance of The White House Place Learning Garden with schools, nonprofits, and LAUSD.
    • Strengthen relationships with local schools or organizations for garden programming. 
    • Budget management of the White House Place Learning Garden.  
    • Facilitation of Public Lands Committee in coordination with Director of Organizing & Advocacy and Director of Culturals Arts & Base Building to explore the creation of more green spaces within Central LA when opportunities arise. 

    Fundraising (10%)

    • Grant writing to secure funding for BVCLT community programs spearheaded by the Director of Resident & Land Stewardship.
    • Lead and coordinate the annual BVCLT Fundraiser. 

    Staff Collective (10%)

    • Participation in regular meetings with the staff collective, and board. 
    • Participation in membership and/or coalition meetings on an as-needed basis.
    • Engage in co-designing internal policies including building internal transparency, supporting each other and working collaboratively on an as-needed basis. 

    Required Skills [Please note we do not expect someone to have all skills to apply] 

    • Experience with 2 years of property management or 3 years of community organizing.
    • Understanding and ability to explain of the community land trust model
    • Ability to work remotely and independently with minimal direct supervision
    • Strong facilitation skills and able to work in collaborative projects
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working on teams.
    • Comfort designing outreach & presentation materials
    • Experience working with culturally diverse constituents
    • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends
    • Willingness to travel and represent BVCLT.
    • Must have reliable transportation or arrangement of transportation

    Big Pluses (but not requirements) 

    • Familiarity or experience with project managing building rehabilitation projects in the City of Los Angeles
    • Familiarity or experiences with transformative justice and/or restorative justice.
    • Proficiency in another language widely spoken in Koreatown (Spanish, Korean, Bangla, Thai, Urdu, Tagalog)
    • Experience with Asset Management. 
    • Experience with grant writing and/or fundraising

    Benefícios

    32 hour work week, healthcare stipend, staff development training fund, Unlimited PTO, 2 weeks of winter holidays office closure, and all federal holidays recognized as paid time off. Staff Collective also vote on other times to shut down the office for rest.
