    Position Details

    The Staff Accountant is a full-time (40-hours per week) position, reporting to the Accounting Manager. This position will be responsible for the accounting and reporting for a multi-million-dollar non-profit revenue portfolio, while supporting the Accounting Manager in the management of the general ledger, monthly close, annual financial audit, and other duties as requested.

    This is a remote position, but employees have the opportunity to work from one of our four physical offices if they reside within commuting distance. Also, the employee must be located within or be moving to the general Appalachian region and be willing and able to travel to approximately four mandatory team gatherings annually.

    Primary Roles & Responsibilities

    • Revenue Management: Manage the accounting for the organization’s revenues, including invoicing funders, recording gifts in the accounting system, and creating journal entries as needed.
    • Budgeting: Assist in the organizational budgeting process and prepare budgets to support grant applications.
    • Compliance: Ensure that accounting treatment for revenue recognition complies with the written agreements and current non-profit accounting standards.
    • Reporting: Review and provide budget-versus-actual reports on the grant portfolio for funders and program team leads.
    • Reconciliation: Perform monthly revenue reconciliations of the financial and CRM systems, as well as bank and other reconciliations as assigned.
    • Other: Assist with review and approval of staff expense reports, preparation of audit schedules, and other related duties as necessary or assigned.

    Skills & Qualifications

    • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, or equivalent degree with significant accounting coursework and experience.
    • Minimum 2 years of accounting experience required.
    • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
    • Preference for candidates with nonprofit / grant accounting experience and/or CPA license.
    • Proficiency in Excel required. Experience with NetSuite and Salesforce preferred.
    • Good written and verbal communications skills.
    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
    • Ability to produce high quality work and exercise good judgment.
    • Self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and in teams.
    • Demonstrated interest in nonprofit work and environmental justice required.

    This is a full-time, non-exempt position that is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit; specific terms and conditions of employment are subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    Appalachian Voices offers competitive compensation and benefits that include employer-paid health care, vision, and dental policies with options to include family members at a reduced cost; short- and long-term disability plans; generous paid vacation and parental leave; flexible working hours; and an employer-matched retirement plan.

    Salary is commensurate with experience; however, the expected salary range is between $63,000 and $75,000.
