    The Director of Education is a part-time role responsible for developing a community of high school educators who are engaged in training their students in publishing their science manuscripts on the eirXiv www.eirxiv.org preprint server and submitting for the Journal of Emerging Investigators peer review and publication process. By developing resources and sharing these with high school educators, the Director will create a community of teachers who are trained to deliver these standards within their classroom lesson plans.

    The Director will interface with educators regularly, assist with questions/answers and work to develop a group of trained teachers who can eventually serve to train others in their community. The vision for this team member is to create a network of educators in underserved communities, rural areas and urban schools that are regularly utilizing the eiRxiv server and JEI to teach students about science transparency, reading the work of other students, receiving feedback and publishing their science research.

    Development of new curricula across a range of science disciplines will be critical. The education director must be committed to improving teaching practices through collaboration with high school educators. They should be able to use new and existing resources to ensure student needs are met, and educational goals are achieved.

    To be successful as an education director, you should stay up-to-date with pedagogical theories and developments in education and science communication. The Director should have superb people skills and be confident in engaging individuals from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.

    The Director’s primary responsibilities will include:

    • Design, revise and implement educator training tools to ensure ease-of-use in providing classroom instruction to students.
    • Working with the editorial team to ensure submissions are aligned with expectations
    • Partner with educators and groups of educators to provide training on science writing and the eiRxiv platform.
    • Create and maintain a community of educators who express an interest in integrating the publishing process into their curriculum and/or working with students to publish their work.
    • Establish groups of educators using the server in underserved and rural areas
    • Create programming to assist educators with presenting to students via zoom about the benefits of publishing their work
    • Convey the importance of science transparency as it relates to understanding writing about their work

    Preferred skills and experience:

    • Master's degree in a science field.
    • Experience with science writing.
    • Teaching certification and previous teaching experience.
    • The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Excellent organizational skills.
    • The ability to use tact and diplomacy in interactions with all relevant parties.
    • Maintain a positive attitude and be open to feedback.
    • Experience in working in a remote environment via zoom or google meet.

    Work hours/day:

    • Flexibility with some business hours and occasional evening meetings
    • No holidays
    • Ability to work in multiple time zones within the United States
    • 20 hours per week, fully remote
    • Projected start date of December 1, 2024.

    Compensation

    • $30,000 per year
    • Grant funded position for up to four (4) years

    Reporting structure

    • This role interfaces with team members on the eiRxiv and JEI teams and reports to the Executive Director.
