    Overview

    Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to experience epic and adventurous presentations that cannot be mounted elsewhere in New York City.

    Summary

    The General Manager is responsible for the business operations of the Armory’s Programming department, which is responsible for full-scale Drill Hall productions, recitals, artists’ studios, artists’ talks, lectures, tours, new commissions, and other programming. The General Manager has primary responsibility for management of all programming related contracts budgets payroll, and payables to ensure timely negotiation, execution, and implementation in support of Armory productions and programs.

    Due to the nature of this role, this is a fully on-site role.

    Supervision

    The General Manager reports to the Senior Vice President and Chief Artistic Producer on all programming business operations as well as the President and Executive Producer on budgets. The General Manager also works in close collaboration with the Producers, Company Managers, and other Programming staff.

    Responsibilities

    A. Contract Management

    1. Responsible for directly handling all aspects of contracting for Drill Hall productions, including preparing and negotiating contracts for artists, stage managers, and production personnel, as well as royalties and production licenses.
    2. Manage overall programming contract and payment process, including establishing and maintaining contract templates, ensuring timely and accurate preparation and execution of contracts, maintain a thorough and up-to-date log of contracts and deliverables, adhering to contractual timelines and deadlines, working with staff and counsel on legal and work rule matters, processing contractual and invoiced payments, and overseeing and approving contracts for programs outside of the Drill Hall.
    3. Perform other contract management responsibilities as needed and assigned.

    B. Budget Management

    1. In consultation with the Chief Artistic Producer, develop and manage a full range of complex production budgets, including researching, planning, consolidating, projecting, reporting, revising, analyzing, tracking, and reforecasting.
    2. Regularly present and report on budgets and updates to the Executive Producer and Chief Artistic Producer.
    3. Perform other budget management responsibilities as needed and assigned.

    C. Schedule Management

    1. Manage schedules and timelines for productions and commissions, including determining, tracking, and ensuring adherence to key milestones for contracting, pre-production, production, marketing, press, and box office.

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function to a high professional standard. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required. Ideal candidates will be organized, motivated, high-energy, hands-on self-starters who work well within a fast-paced environment.

    • Minimum of 5 years of experience with a proven track record as a general manager of performing arts productions in dynamic environments with strict timelines.
    • Substantial skill and experience with all aspects of contracting and contract management, including working knowledge of Actors Equity Association contracts.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage complex budgets with a track record of accuracy and high-level Excel skills.
    • Experience improving existing systems and developing new processes for increased efficiency and productivity.
    • Excellent organizational and recordkeeping abilities and attention to detail.
    • Proven interpersonal skills and nuanced understanding of artists and artistic issues from hands on experience, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, proactively manage multiple priorities with tight and changing deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
    • Sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion in handling confidential information and sensitive matters.
    • Strong proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
    • Familiarity with ADP and Netsuite a plus
