Overview:
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated genealogist to join our team as a volunteer. This role involves helping clients uncover at least one enslaved ancestor in their family tree and an optional role to assist our main coordinator with short workshops for high school students.
Responsibilities:
1. Genealogical Research:
- Conduct in-depth genealogical research to identify at least one enslaved ancestor in the family trees of our clients.
- Utilize various genealogical databases, historical records, and other resources to trace and document ancestral lines.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of research findings.
2. Workshops for High School Students (optional):
- Attend as a special guest to at least one workshop during the school year for highschool students interested in learning about their family history and genealogy.
- Speak on the basics of genealogical research, including how to use online databases and historical records.
- Guide students in preparing their genealogical findings for presentation.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in genealogical research, particularly in tracing African American ancestry and histories of enslavement.
- Strong knowledge of genealogical databases, archival research, and historical records.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage and inspire
- Patience, empathy, and cultural sensitivity in dealing with sensitive historical information.
- Passion for education and community service.
