Director at Large - Volunteer Opportunity

Vivo, a charitable enterprise in the recreation sector committed to fostering healthier generations in North Central Calgary and beyond, seeks a Director at Large to join our esteemed governance board. Vivo’s purpose is to live for healthier generations. Our Mission is to inspire a mindset for healthy living. We envision a world where individuals and communities ignite change to shape healthier generations.

As a Director at Large for Vivo, your impact on the community goes beyond overseeing the organization. Over the past twenty years, Vivo has focused on transcending physical structures and fostering a holistic mindset within the community. This journey of self-reflection has led to a more inclusive and welcoming organization that encourages individuals to see themselves as change-makers for healthier generations.

By taking on this role, you will contribute to Vivo's ongoing vision. Shared experiences and aspirations include finding passion, setting goals, embracing balance and mindfulness, fostering social connections, and nurturing a deeper relationship with nature. Your strategic oversight and governance principles will help manifest these collective dreams into impactful actions that positively influence the community.

As Vivo's mission, vision, and values align with creating a space that reflects harmony with nature and the well-being of individuals, your role as a Director at Large will play a crucial part in shaping the organization's initiatives toward this goal. Your leadership will guide Vivo in continuing to honour the co-creation process with the community and ensure that the organization remains dedicated to raising healthier generations.

Vivo’s Board is committed to governance excellence and is actively pursuing accreditation through Imagine Canada’s Standards Program.  As a registered charity, Vivo’s objects define the organization’s current and future direction.

    • To advance public health by improving social, physical and emotional wellbeing through the provision of athletic and recreational programs that support developing the ability and knowledge of body movement.
    • To engage in research to establish improved public participation programs that enhance mental and emotional health by examining the established relationship between physical fitness and improved health.
    • To advance education about the research outcomes of the Society and others engaged in similar work.
    • To promote the efficiency and effectiveness of charities by offering the Society's resources to assist registered charities to fulfill their charitable purposes, in keeping with the administrative guidelines of the Charities Directorate.
    • To provide public amenities by offering the Society's facilities for public use to support and advance public health.

The ideal candidate for this role is a strategic leader with a proven track record in relationship management and team leadership, particularly with experience in one or more of the following sectors:

    • Human Resources
    • Science or Social Research
    • Fund Development
    • Investment Management
    • Government Relations
    • Governance and/or Legal

    Qualifications:

    • Demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships and open doors for Vivo.
    • Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial mindset.
    • Proficient in diplomacy and conflict resolution.
    • Track record of facilitating productive meetings.
    • Dedication to Vivo's mission, vision, values, strategy, and governance principles.

    Responsibilities:

Directors commit to a minimum three-year term and approximately 10 hours per month for committee work and meetings, with a slight increase during onboarding and special events like the AGM. Directors are expected to sit on at least one committee.
