We run two summer programs, Pony Pals and Giddy Up and Grow. Giddy Up and Grow is for therapeutic riders, primarily at risk youth. With the help of a volunteer, the participants ride, but also do other activities around the farm and nature trails, as well as work on reading and journaling as a part of every day. Pony Pals is mostly recreational riders, with some able bodied, therapeutic clients. Each client in Pony Pals is assigned a horse and a volunteer for the whole week, learning to ride and about horse care in a fun, social, enviroment.
There are 8 one week sessions, volunteers can sign up for one week or multiple weeks - even the whole summer! Volunteers will lead the horses during lessons, help the students learn to groom and tack, and assist with afternoon activities such as giving the horses baths, doing horse related games and art projects, reading, journaling, working in the garden and more!
Volunteers MUST have experience working with horses, and should be 14 or older. We have orientation and training for all our volunteers, and evaluate their skill level before they work with clients.
Ideally we would like to have the same volunteer with the same student for a whole week, 8:00 to 2:00, and then stay to help in the barn from 2:00 to 4:00. We are willing to discuss alternative schedules, such as 8:30 to 2:00 or even 8:30to 12:00.
Reach out to our Volunteer Coordinators, Caron and Tammy, at Volunteer@windrushfarm.org for more information.
