The Center for Investigative Reporting

The Center for Investigative Reporting is a nonprofit, investigative news organization that is home to two nationally known and critically acclaimed brands: Mother Jones, the magazine, started in 1976; and Reveal, the radio show and podcast, started in 2013. Combined, they reach millions of people each month across their websites, newsletters, radio show, podcast, print magazine, social media, and videos.

In addition, the Center for Investigative Reporting Studios produces investigative documentaries such as The Grab, released in 2024; Victim/Suspect, released on Netflix in 2023; and Heroin(e), which received an Oscar nomination in 2018.

We are America’s oldest investigative news outlet, and are based in San Francisco with bureaus in Washington, DC, and New York. We are an independent newsroom (meaning we don’t have any corporate owners), and are accountable only to our readers and listeners.

Our mission is to deliver hard-hitting reporting that raises awareness and inspires change, and our newsroom investigates the big stories that may be ignored or overlooked by other news outlets, everything from democracy and voting rights, to racial justice and reproductive rights.
