Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.

NOSH Food Rescue NPC (NOSH) aims at reducing food insecurity, by diverting, re-purposing, and redistributing prepared and perishable surplus food that is still wholesome and nutritious.

The successful roll-out of this project will result in the following outcomes:

    • Urban food waste streams are utilised to alleviate hunger in the short term and food insecurity in the longer term.
    • Widespread support of Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs - reducing stunted growth due to malnutrition and improving the future of the next generation of South Africans
    • Direct access to food and skills development for women and youth
    • Growing hope
    • Reducing fear, hunger, malnutrition and violence
    • Providing food security
    • Food advocacy
    • Eventual establishment of dignified and interactive solutions to battle food insecurity – as opposed to soup kitchens and handout queues which don't address societal issues of culture, pride and self-worth.
    • A pro-active contribution to reducing the waste of limited and non-renewable physical resources required to grow, transport, store and consume food, such as water, fossil fuels etc. and hence contributing to general lowering of the carbon footprint of the food industry and impacting positively on climate change
    • Strong, inter-active communities where food is not wasted and the poor, homeless, indigent and displaced have reliable access to nutritious food
    • Facilitation of the creation of food gardens to create sustainable access to improved nutrition, accessing existing skills and skills development programs
    • Education and empowerment of individuals, communities and volunteers (local and international) around reducing food waste and how to apply such learning in other communities
    • Creating a network meshing private, corporate, municipal and civil entities and encouraging collaborative efforts to address food security and hunger
    • Upliftment of underprivileged people within the greater Johannesburg area by improving access to nutrition, thereby reducing sickness, reducing violence, increasing life expectancy and quality of life

    3 Year Plan

To be optimally positioned for the likely promulgation of the Ubuntu Surplus Food Donations Act which will make it mandatory for retailers to co-operate with non-profit organisations to utilise food waste.

This will involve broadening and scaling up existing activities in order to build capacity to be ready for expansion once this Act is promulgated. This will include:

    • Increasing awareness and publicity around food waste
    • Regular fund-raising events (monthly Odd Plate Dinners and seasonal fundraising Mystery Menu banquets)
    • Development of the marketplace and virtual network
    • Expanding the warehousing and distribution network
    • Developing a replicable Skill Sharing and Volunteer Ambassador model, creating local partnerships between those who want to help themselves and those who have the time, goodwill and skills to do so and to expand this on a national basis
