Association Chaska “Virgen de Guadalupe” is a non-profit organization that aims to promote global peace and justice through sustainable personal, social and economic development. Each year, we offer our “Community Education Program for Migrant Families (Children, Adolescents, and Mothers)”, which consists of educational workshops for children and parents that focus on various themes, such as nutrition, hygiene, and the environment. This program was born out of the recognition of the need to enhance the personal growth of our local children, adolescents, mothers and families, and designed to help them create individual life plans that are intimately tied to the development of their communities. Through the program, we seek to impart skills and abilities of self-management, while simultaneously maintaining a holistic and transformative approach, for we are motivated by the search for a more just society in which all people can grow and live with dignity.

Chaska’s approach to education is one of integrated training that includes productive, social, and Christian-Humanistic components. The productive component deals with themes that are directly relevant to the economic realities of the families we serve, e.g. the breeding of guinea pigs and the use of irrigation technology, which are also outlined as important sources of development in the strategic plan of Peru’s Ministry of Agriculture. The social component includes academic reinforcement, which consists of the use of verbal and logical reasoning and English language acquisition, as the lens through which the practical skills of the productive component are taught. By combining academic and practical training, we hope to simultaneously confront several problems that the migrant families in our communities face: first, widespread poverty; second, poor academic performance and retention rates in this region’s schools; third, poor self-esteem and lack of confidence among individuals; and fourth, exclusion from our increasingly globalized society, in which English has become a universal language. The social component also includes training in exercising civic duties and making political decisions to develop a social consciousness, which correspond to the strategic plans of our local and regional governments and local civic organizations. This aspect of our work will utilize materials borrowed from the nearby Leadership School of the Bartolomé de las Casas Institute. Finally, the Christian-Humanistic component is based on the practice of values and ethics, which corresponds to the pastoral work plans of the parish churches in nearby Huaura. In this way, we aim to improve the quality of life for the migrant families of Primavera, Túpac Amaru and Otoño, three communities in the province of Huaura and the department of Lima in Peru.
