    MISSION STATEMENT

To maintain Lifeskills – Learning for Living as a Centre of Excellence dedicated to improving the safety and wellbeing of the community.

The Centre aims to reduce unintentional injury and to promote a safe and healthy lifestyle by influencing attitudes and changing behaviour.

    Details

Since January 2000, Lifeskills has provided safety education through a range of different programmes, including our Year 6 Children’s Programme.

Each year, schools are invited to bring their Year 6 pupils (age 10/11) for a guided tour around the safety centre, which is modelled as a realistic village. During the tour, children are presented with hazardous scenarios in a range of different settings, including a road, beach, dark alleyway, shop, homes, and a railway platform.

Supported by the Programme Co-ordinator, each session is covered by a volunteer Host and up to 15 volunteer Child Safety Tour Guides.

A highlight in the school calendar, Lifeskills provides an exciting, interactive, and memorable experience. We provide a safe environment, in which children learn about life's common dangers, and the education we provide supports the ‘Keeping Safe’ elements of the Personal, Health, Social, Economic curriculum (PHSE).

    What we offer:

Child Safety Tour Guide involves escorting small groups of children around our ‘indoor village’ and helping them learn how to avoid everyday hazards, to keep themselves and others safe. This fun, rewarding, term-time role comes with flexible hours, full training, plus we'll cover any out-of-pocket expenses.

A Guide would lead a group of 3-4 children on a tour through each of our ‘safety themed’ scenarios. With the aid of a script (as well as using props, lighting, and sound effects), they'll encourage the children to get involved in spotting lots of hazards, in a variety of day-to-day situations.

Important safety messages and help them make practise emergency 999 phone calls, so that they leave Lifeskills knowing how to live much safer, healthier, more independent lives.
