School for a Village is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to bridging the gap in science and technology education through need-specific support. We work with secondary schools around the world to promote digital inclusion and quality education.
We recognize each school exists within its own unique social and cultural context, and therefore may face unique challenges. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. As a result, we work very closely with individual schools and community members to assess a school’s needs. We believe that the people living in our partner communities know their own communities best – so we develop and implement solutions together.
In addition to our own programs, we often collaborate with other nonprofits and companies to creatively address the needs of our partner schools. We hope to amplify existing solutions and programs, ensuring that we get them to where they are needed most.
Ultimately, different needs require different solutions. We work with schools to connect the dots.
Here are a few of our past projects:
Vidya Mandir School serves 700+ secondary school students from Bahjoi and the surrounding regions. School for a Village established 3 fully-furnished science laboratories for chemistry, biology, and physics. We provided an assortment of lab equipment including microscopes, glassware, reagents, electronic circuit parts, prism, pendulums, thermometers, and hot plates. Over 1000 students have used these labs.
The national curriculum in India includes hands-on experiments. These segments of the curriculum were previously skipped. With the completion of these new science labs, students are now finishing the entirety of the national curriculum and performing well.
Daraja Academy is a boarding school serving 120+ girls experiencing material poverty.
Students come to Daraja Academy from diverse geographic, tribal, and religious backgrounds with vastly different levels of competency in English and Science. As a result, teaching at any one level to all students is simply not effective. School for a Village has partnered with Choosito!, an NSF-funded student search engine and digital library, to bring high-quality, personalized resources to Daraja students.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, School for a Village provided mobile devices, enabling girls to engage in remote learning.
Iembeni Secondary School is a public school serving 120+ students from Iembeni Village.
School for a Village has provided calculators, geometric sets, and laboratory equipment, enabling Iembeni Secondary School students to complete the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) for the first time. The supplies are being incorporated in each student’s day-to-day learning.
