The John A. Hartford Foundation is a private philathropy established in 1929 by John A. Hartford. The Foundation's overall goal is to increase the nation's capacity to provide effective and affordable care to its rapidly increasing elderly population. The foundation manages an endowment of approximately $500 million and 100 active grants with a professional staff of 16 and a governing board of 11 trustees. Funding is organized in two main areas: academic geriatrics and training and integrating and improving services. Academic geriatrics and training grants are designed to improve the preparation or practice of health professionals in medicine, nursing or social work. Awards are primarily to educational institutions and professional organizations. Integrating and improving services grants are designed to develop and test new modes of health care practice or disseminate successful innovations widely in practice.
