    Breast cancer education, screening and treatment for Arab women.

    AMBER is a program of the NYU Cancer Institute, NYU Langone Medical Center

    There is evidence that the primary barriers to Arab Americans' cancer services usage are language barriers lack of knowledge, and transportation. Additionally, the aftermath of September 11th damaged trust between Arab American immigrants and government agencies, often causing them to stay away from any public service, including health care that appears to be connected to the U.S. government. In 2007 with funding from Komen Greater NYC, NYU Cancer Institute and the Center for Immigrant Health started AMBER- Arab American Breast Cancer Education and Referral program to increase the utilization of breast cancer early detection services for Arab American women in Brooklyn and Queens, through culturally appropriate breast cancer education and screening coordination. Project activities include:

    Arabic language breast health materials A screening coordinator to navigate women through their health care encounters Education for healthcare professionals that service the community. Women without insurance are referred to the NYS Cancer Services Partnerships in Brooklyn and Queens. AMBER increases the likelihood that culturally appropriate information will be accepted, and an increased number of Arab American women will be screened for breast cancer.
