MIT has recently announced and launched a substantial
commitment to a new program in the science of learning and education, MITili. This program responds to the urgent need to
improve education for many students and the contributions that cognitive and
social sciences can make towards improving education. MIT has made many important but disparate
contributions to education, but creation of the MITili aims to galvanize more
and better achievements from MIT to have a greater impact on American and
global education.
MITili is a cross-disciplinary, Institute-wide initiative to (1) foster quantitative
and rigorous research on how people learn,
(2) combine research in cognitive psychology, neuroscience, economics,
engineering, public policy, and other fields to investigate what methods and
approaches to education work
best for different people and subjects, and (3) improve learning and teaching
from K-12 through college through continuing on-line education.
