The mission of the Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing is to increase and preserve safe, affordable, and accessible rental housing and support and advocate for the rights of tenants.

Meaningful access to the courts for all is the essence of our judicial system, and we understand the value quality legal representation can mean to a person or family in crisis. We fill a unique niche in the legal services community and need your help to ensure that vulnerable tenants in our community have equal access to the judicial process.

For over 30 years, Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing (LCBH) has been recognized as a leading public interest law firm specializing in housing law and policy. Founded in 1980 by a small group of lawyers concerned about deteriorating apartment buildings and housing abandonment in the Rogers Park neighborhood, LCBH now serves all of Chicago providing a full spectrum of legal programs plus supportive services for low to mid-income tenants in the private rental market. This target group of tenants represents more than 70% of Chicago's low-income households. LCBH provides advocacy, legal representation, supportive services, education and outreach as a means of empowering tenants and preserving decent affordable housing in Chicago. Through the collaboration of legal and supportive services, LCBH offers a holistic approach to its clients by means of equal access to legal representation and linkages to essential services that can help avoid homelessness and help stabilize their housing in the long term.
