    About the organization:

The Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence (MFEE) provides resources for educators, schools, and students and brings new ideas and critical support to Montclair Public Schools. Through our Navegadores Escolares program we provide direct support to families of multilingual learners who speak Spanish or Portuguese and advocate for system improvements. The program currently includes over 80 families, over 100 children, and more than 50 volunteers. We also provide technical assistance to local and regional organizations.

    About the position:

The Program Coordinator is the primary point of contact for families served by the program and helps them register for school, apply for services, access health care, and navigate their children's school experience. In this role, you will work shoulder-to-shoulder with families, school staff, community partners, and volunteers.

You are committed to supporting newcomer families, and are fluent in Spanish and English. You are organized and can handle multiple responsibilities. You can apply your skills to connect with families, assess their needs and choices, navigate complex situations, and develop thoughtful solutions in collaboration with families. You are excited to work in a collaborative and hyper-local organization that engages with a broad range of partners. We encourage you to apply if you are excited by this work and can transfer your skills and experience to the nonprofit sector or to direct service programming. You are looking for part-time employment that is person-oriented and impactful.

    Primary responsibilities:

    • Be the first point of contact for families who are seeking support. Assess the families’ needs, support school registration, provide referrals to community resources, and onboard them into the program.
    • Respond to requests for individualized support (examples: providing transportation to appointments, participating in meetings with school staff, helping to apply for public assistance programs).
    • Conduct outreach to families to share critical information and opportunities.
    • Help design and facilitate workshops for families.
    • Collaborate with other MFEE staff, volunteers, schools, families, and community partners to identify systemic issues and develop solutions.
    • Manage the day-to-day operations of the program, including:
      • Maintain program data and participant records and forms.
      • Develop and execute project plans.
      • Triage and prioritize issues and tasks as they arise.

    Requirements:

    • Native or bilingual Spanish verbal proficiency and working written proficiency.
    • Ability and sensitivity to work with newcomer families
    • 2-4 years of experience working with families, youth, or in a community services setting.
    • Ability to work independently and in teams, follow through on tasks, and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to effectively assess family needs, navigate complex situations, and develop thoughtful solutions in collaboration with families
    • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
    • Demonstrated ability to learn new software/technology
    • Educational requirements: We welcome applicants with college or graduate degrees, as well as those without degrees who have relevant experience and skills.

    Schedule and compensation:

    • 20-25 hours per week, exclusively in-person.
    • $23-26/hour depending on experience; the position does not include benefits.
