    GENERAL SOCIETY PROGRAM DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

    ABOUT THE GENERAL SOCIETY:

    The General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen of the City of New York was founded in 1785 by the skilled craftsmen of the City. Today, this 239-year old organization continues to serve and improve the quality of life of the people of the City of New York through its educational, philanthropic and cultural programs including its tuition-free Mechanics Institute, The General Society Library, and its nearly two-century-old Lecture Series.

    THE POSITION:

    The General Society Program Director will develop the Society’s Public Lecture Programs, oversee the Society’s short- term rentals, collaborate as part of a team with the operation of the Mechanics institute (an evening educational program) and deliver other related assignments for the Executive Office.

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

    GSMT Lecture Programming

    • Source, plan, promote and deliver a series of ongoing in-person and online (hybrid) lectures, in consultation with the Executive Director, for the General Society Artisan, Labor, Literature and Landmark Lecture Series. (For current lectures, please click here.)
    • Continue to expand both the in-person and on-line GSMT Lecture Program Audience and strengthen relationships with related organizations.

    Mechanics Institute (MI)

    • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Mechanics Institute Program Coordinator/Registrar on all aspects of MI operations.

    Management of Short Term Program Space Rentals

    • Manage all short-term Program Space Rentals from inception to completion.

    Executive Office Responsibilities

    • Assist in the planning of special events, in coordination with the Executive Director including Annual Benefit and GSMT Member-related activity.
    • Oversee Donor Contributions and Communications.
    • Coordinate the bi-annual publication of the GSMT News.
    • Perform other related duties within the scope of the position including providing administrative support for the Society’s Offices.
    • Attend all public programs and appropriate GSMT membership-related activity.
    • Posting Content to General Society website.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

    Skills:

    • Outstanding verbal, written communication and public presentation skills.
    • Superb organizational and analytical skills, as well as the ability to be flexible and resourceful.
    • Must be highly proactive with excellent interpersonal skills and able to work professionally with a wide variety of people including staff, lecturers, board members, faculty, students and general public.
    • Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks while working in a fast-paced environment, and have the capacity to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines.
    • Excellent problem identification and problem-solving skills required.
    • Requires ability to both function independently and as part of a small team.
    • Strong technology and computer skills required.
    • Basic Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Basic Quickbooks, Wordpress, Zoom, Constant Contact, and Eventbrite knowledge preferred.

    Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
