The Medicare Rights Center (www.medicarerights.org) is a national, nonprofit consumer service organization that works to ensure access to affordable health care for older adults and people with disabilities through counseling and advocacy, educational programs, and public policy initiatives. Medicare Rights’ unique blend of service, education, and advocacy ensures that real consumer experiences reach the highest levels of policymaking, and that policies and laws adopted at state and federal levels are translated for consumers and effectively implemented. Since its founding in 1989, Medicare Rights has been helping people with Medicare understand their rights and benefits, navigate the Medicare system, and secure the quality health care they deserve. Medicare Rights is the largest and most reliable independent source of Medicare information and assistance in the United States.

    The Position— Education Associate

Medicare Rights is seeking a full-time Education Associate. This position will report to the Director of Education and divide time developing and testing educational materials for consumers, caregivers, and professionals; leading presentations and trainings; and providing client counseling via phone and email.

    Specific Responsibilities

    • Develop and edit legally accurate, user-friendly print and online materials—including content for Medicare Interactive, training materials (slide decks, FAQs), and more—for diverse consumer and professional audiences.
    • Participate in partner meetings and recommend edits and additions to Medicare Rights’ educational materials to make them as useful as possible to consumers, their families, and the professionals serving them.
    • Contribute weekly shifts on Medicare Rights’ national consumer helpline and technical assistance channels, collecting relevant data on call topics and trends and making timely referrals as needed.
    • Lead local and national presentations to educate consumers and professionals about the Medicare program. Presentations are done in person in New York City and State and via webinar for national audiences.
    • Assume responsibility for a variety of other Education department projects, including working with the IT department to brainstorm, test, and implement new online learning features; working with the Communications department to create educational social media content; and drafting new print and e-learning content.

    Qualifications

The successful candidate is a superb writer and communicator, highly motivated and organized, and with experience working independently and in collaboration. If you are interested in behind-the-scenes writing and content creation with some direct service work, this is an ideal position for you.

    Specific qualifications include the following:

    • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.
    • Exceptionally strong writing and communication skills, including an ability to convey complex information in a consumer-friendly and visual manner.
    • Empathy and commitment to consumer education and advocacy.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills, experience managing multiple tasks, and ability to meet due dates.
    • Ability to work independently and use a variety of technologies to connect virtually with colleagues.
    • Experience with or knowledge of Medicare, public health issues, and/or adult learning best practices a plus.

Medicare Rights supports a culture of learning and professional growth. Those who meet many but not all of the qualifications are still encouraged to apply.

The work schedule is hybrid, currently remote (3-4 days) and in-person (1-2 days), with additional flexibility as approved by supervisor. Salary is commensurate with experience. Annual salary from $45,000 to $50,000. The Medicare Rights Center offers a generous benefits package.
