    Catawba Lands Conservancy (CLC) and Carolina Thread Trail is a nonprofit regional land trust and developing trail network dedicated to saving land and connecting lives to nature (https://catawbalands.org/). We are located in the Southern Piedmont of North Carolina, centered in Charlotte, NC. CLC protects natural land that contributes to clean water, provides habitat for wildlife, supports local farms and provides public access to nature. Stewardship of CLC’s 18,000 acres of conserved lands is a critical function and includes monitoring of properties, managing public access and caring for the land through habitat and water restoration projects. The Carolina Thread Trail (CTT) is a growing regional network of greenways, trails and blueways (approximately 500 miles) that connect 15 counties, 2 states and 2.9 million people, which will eventually encompass 1,600 miles of trails. The organization has an annual budget of $2.3 million, permanent staff of 19 and other part-time and seasonal employees.

    Position Description:

    The Director of Finance is responsible for leading the finance function of the organization and supporting personnel and the Board of CLC/CTT. The Director supervises the full-time Staff Accountant and reports to the Executive Director.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum BA, preference for CPA or MBA
    • 7-10 years of broad financial and operations management experience
    • Experience with nonprofit accounting
    • Prior experience with final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for an organization, large division or large program area
    • Experience leading human resources
    • Prior experience with grants management
    • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel

    Position Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Financial Management

    o Analyze, prepare and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner

    o Oversee and perform all financial, project and program accounting

    o Coordinate, prepare and lead the annual audit and 990 process

    o Backup to Staff Accountant for payroll

    o Schedule, prepare, and report financial matters to the Finance Committee

    o Lead, create and submit the annual budget to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors

    o Review and track expenses and revenue

    o Prepare Balance Sheet, revenue, restricted funds and bank reconciliations

    o Manage cash flow and treasury responsibilities

    o With the Finance Committee, make recommendations regarding investment of short-, mid- and long-term funds

    o Effectively communicate financial matters to the Board of Directors

    o Manage the accounting details of grants

    o Participate as a member of the lead staff team

    • Human Resources

    o Manage human resource policies and assist supervising managers with human resource questions

    o Maintain the Staff handbook

    o Lead negotiations and recommend options for employee benefits

    o Manage Simple IRA documents, onboarding and funding

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    This position is full-time (40 hours a week) with medical benefits, 13 paid holidays, paid time off and Simple IRA with matched contribution. The salary range is $80,000-$100,000.
