CSP is a private, non-profit organization created by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. In 1967, the agency now known as Community Service Programs of West Alabama, Inc. (CSP) opened its doors to provide assistance to low-income families and individuals as well as those with special needs in the Tuscaloosa area. With the motto: “A hand up, and not just a hand out” and an emphasis on training, CSP focused on community enhancement through collaboration, while equipping constituents with basic skills needed to promote independence. CSP has provided the delivery of uninterrupted service to low to moderate income individuals and families for 50 years.

Today, CSP operates in a nine-county service area (Bibb, Choctaw, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Pickens, Sumter and Tuscaloosa).  Services vary in some counties. Pickens has limited services including Weatherization and Early Intervention. Marengo has Early Intervention services only. The Agency also provides various levels of service to other Alabama counties. Sumter and Choctaw were awarded to CSP in a reorganization of another community action agency.

CSP programs include Head Start, Early Intervention, Housing Counseling, Home Repair and Weatherization, Affordable Housing, Foreclosure Prevention Measures and Resources, Property Management, Workforce Development, Disaster Relief, Information and Referral Services, and Meals on Wheels. With over 40 years of experience in administering grants and supportive service programs, CSP has a tremendous knowledge of the needs of those living in poverty in the west Alabama area.
