  • About Us

Mission: Enrich the lives of a diverse and changing community through modern and contemporary art.

The Orange County Museum of Art champions and interprets the art and culture of our time for a diverse and changing community. The museum is guided by the conviction that exhibitions and programs should link historical and contemporary art, bridge local and global cultures, and inspire the sense of inquiry, creativity, and imagination within all people.

    OCMA HISTORY

The museum opened in 1962 as the Balboa Pavilion Gallery by thirteen visionary women. In 1968 the institution became the Newport Harbor Art Museum and in 1972, moved to a nearby, larger location. Interest and support continued to grow, as did its collections and exhibitions, and in 1977, the museum opened its doors on San Clemente Drive. In 1997 the museum was remodeled and renamed the Orange County Museum of Art. In June 2018, the museum closed its doors in Newport Beach, and in October 2018 opened its temporary location in Santa Ana in South Coast Plaza Village where the museum will operate as it builds a permanent home at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

    OCMAEXPAND

During our time in our temporary location, we have launched OCMAEXPAND-SANTA ANA, meant to push us to think differently and more creatively about how we fulfill our mission while we operate out of our temporary Santa Ana location. We are extending our world view to embrace more fully the globalism of artistic production. Never has the OC been more connected to and influenced by the culture, politics and economics the communities that are flourishing around the Pacific Rim, and we want our exhibition offerings and public programs to take full advantage of this. In the end, our desire is to create a laboratory of artistic expression and a dynamic space for creative thinking, experimentation and dialogue.
