Hebrew Free Burial Association devotes its resources to performing chesed shel emet (the ultimate act of loving kindness). It is the only agency in the New York metropolitan area dedicated to assuring that every Jew, regardless of financial means or religious affiliation, receives a dignified, traditional Jewish funeral and burial.
Since its inception in the 1880’s, HFBA has buried over 65,000 indigent Jews in its two cemeteries on Staten Island. They have ranged in age from newborn to the elderly.
HFBA works with city and social service agencies to locate and later track down those individuals who needed a proper Jewish burial, including those who were buried elsewhere due to oversight or negligence.
