New Disabled South

  • About Us

New Disabled South is the first regional disability organization in the United States, fighting for liberation, justice, and rights for all disabled people in the South. Our mission is to improve the lives of disabled people and cultivate strong disability rights and disability justice frameworks in the South. We are a political home for all disabled people in 14 states across the US South and we are winning policy and narrative change for disabled people through organizing, advocacy, education, and research. All of our work--both internal and external--is grounded in Disability Justice Principles. We focus our efforts on those who are mutliply marginalized across the full spectrum of disability identities, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, immigrant, and other disabled people. We have 3 primary focus areas: 1. Poverty and Care, 2. Criminalization, and 3. Democracy and all of our work in the areas of research, advocacy and organizing, and narrative change are in service of these 3 priorities. We are an organization made up of disabled people working on behalf of disabled people and we are working to see meaningful policy and social change for disabled people in the South in the next 10 years.
