  • About Us

Friendly House was founded as a settlement house in 1930 and builds community in Portland’s urban core. We have two major program areas: Community Services and Children’s Programs. Our services include fitness and educational programming for adults; preschool, after school and summer camp for children; and providing support for older adults and LGBT older adults to live independently in their own homes. Our programs are offered either free or on a sliding scale/scholarship basis to ensure that all people, regardless of income, can participate.

    Mission

Friendly House creates a thriving community by connecting people of all ages and backgrounds through quality educational, recreational and other life-sustaining services.

    Vision

Friendly House, a 21st century settlement house, engages people to create a compassionate, equitable and inclusive society.

    Values

Personal Development — We believe that each individual deserves opportunities for personal growth and enrichment.

Integrity — Our principles are guided by honesty and respect. We are dedicated to fairness, professionalism and fiscal responsibility in all that we do.

Compassion — We recognize the worth and dignity of each individual. We support and advocate for each other, our clients and community members.

Equity — We create an equitable and inclusive community. We challenge systems and behaviors that diminish humanity, and we celebrate cultural, economic and ideological diversity.

Reliability — People can count on us to provide a safe environment, competent staff and effective, high-quality programs.

Vitality — We are enthusiastic, proactive and innovative. We continually strive for success by supporting and inspiring each other to excel.
