Welcome Home Jersey City is a community-based nonprofit organization providing educational, employment and material support for refugees and asylees who have resettled in the Jersey City area. We operate from the philosophy that all people deserve the dignity of a decent home and the resources they need to make a better life for themselves. We facilitate our clients’ successful integration into the community by augmenting and extending services and benefits provided by resettlement agencies. Welcome Home began operating in 2016 and was established as a 501c3 in 2018. The organization finances its activities through grants from foundations, corporations and government agencies and with donations from more than 1,000 individuals per year.
Historically, the organization has partnered with various refugee resettlement agencies and other non-profits to extend the types of support they can offer clients. We have leveraged deep connections within the community to provide a fabric of support. The types of support we offer has shifted depending on the needs of the people we work with and can range from emergency assistance to regular programming.
In the wake of events in Afghanistan, Welcome Home has again pivoted its focus. The organization is now serving as a community partner of the Elizabeth, New Jersey office of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in the resettlement in Jersey City of refugees, Special Immigrant Visa holders, and persons holding humanitarian parolee status. Most are Afghan households being assisted through the Afghan Protection and Assistance (APA) program of the U.S. government. This work is greatly expanding the number of households assisted by Welcome Home.
