Founded in 1998 with the support of the federal judiciary and the Boston Bar Foundation, Discovering Justice is a recognized leader in civic education. We are dedicated to preparing young people to value the justice system, realize the power of their own voices, and embrace civic responsibility by connecting classrooms and courtrooms. We realize this mission through three types of programming: in school, afterschool, and field trips.
Discovering Justice places a special emphasis on the needs of children, particularly those from underserved communities.
Civic education is a critical yet often overlooked way to improve young people's sense of empowerment and membership in a community. Civic education helps students develop the specific skills and attitudes they need to effectively voice an opinion and act on their beliefs. Students who participate in Discovering Justice develop a sense of personal responsibility and respect for others, learn that they can make a difference in their lives and their communities, and become cognizant of the value of their participation.
