  • About Us

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an environmentally and economically sustainable energy future. With locations in Golden and Boulder, Colorado, Fairbanks Alaska, and a satellite office in Washington, D.C., NREL is the primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy technologies in the United States.

From day one at NREL, you’ll connect with coworkers driven by the same mission to save the planet. By joining an organization that values a supportive, inclusive, and flexible work environment, you’ll have the opportunity to engage through our eight employee resource groups, numerous employee-driven clubs, and learning and professional development classes.

At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, we focus on creative answers to today's energy challenges. From breakthroughs in fundamental science to new clean technologies to integrated energy systems that power our lives, NREL researchers are transforming the way the nation and the world use energy. NREL advances the science and engineering of energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power technologies and provides the knowledge to integrate and optimize energy systems.

NREL has decades of focused leadership in clean energy research, development, and deployment. No other institution has the long-standing expertise and breadth of knowledge that will form the foundation of the clean energy transition.

From our work in basic sciences to systems engineering and analysis, all our researchers are focused on solving market-relevant problems that result in deployable solutions. Our partnerships ensure our work is relevant and applicable to the energy problems that people are trying to solve.

We are the trusted clean energy leaders, and our work will guide the nation in achieving ambitious goals in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and a decarbonized clean energy future.

    Transforming energy Through Science.

As climate change, urbanization, economic development, electrification, cyberthreats, and resource competition all increase, the demand these developments place on the world's energy sources will increase with them. As we meet the challenges presented by these megatrends, we must do so in a low-emissions and sustainable way that is inclusive of all people.

Achieving Our Vision | Energy Justice

NREL's vision means leading an energy transition in which solutions are inclusively designed and benefits are equitably distributed. NREL is a leader in applied clean energy practices, working with thousands of communities nationally and around the world, many of which have been historically underserved in terms of access to clean energy or its benefits.

    NREL’s Clean Energy Mission

NREL’s computing capabilities will play a critical role in tackling climate and energy challenges by defining paradigm shifts in cyber, climate resilience, environmental justice, and economy-wide modeling. Researchers tackle challenges in abstracted forms that also benefit the broader community with three major objectives:

    1.                Address fundamental computational science, visualization, and applied mathematics problems in the applied energy space.

    2.                Provide critical support of NREL’s mission, from fundamental research in AI to hybrid computing and applied mathematics.

    3.                Perform interdisciplinary research and development in an environment of use, including analysis and control of integrated complex systems in collaboration with colleagues from across disciplines.
