Heartland Alliance International

  • About Us

Heartland Alliance International (HAI) is a service-based human rights organization based in Chicago, Illinois. It is an affiliate of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, an organization that has been promoting human rights and dignity for 125 years.

HAI has an organizational identity that makes it unique among its international peers. One hundred percent of HAI programs apply a progressive and inclusive approach to protecting and promoting the rights of extremely vulnerable populations that are frequently excluded or forgotten by more traditional development programming. Since its inception, HAI has quickly established itself as an industry leader in several specialized, often high-risk and politically-sensitive program areas, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights. HAI is known for creative program design and methodologies that often include substantive research components. HAI works to ensure that every intervention is both innovative and flexible enough to remain context-specific in the face of constantly changing local environments. HAI is also firmly committed to sustainable development by promoting local ownership of programs and working with participants and local (often nascent) partner organizations to jointly achieve program objectives.
