The Equal Justice Center (EJC) is the leading non-profit law firm in Texas specialized in representation of low-wage immigrant working people, without regard to immigration status. EJC was founded in 2001 as a law firm and legal aid organization to protect low-wage working people, especially immigrants, who are exploited in their workplace. The EJC’s mission is to empower low-income workers, families, and communities to achieve fair treatment in the workplace, in the justice system, and in the larger civil society – regardless of their immigration status. Ninety percent of EJC’s clients are immigrants and 80% of those are unauthorized immigrants. Combatting wage theft is one of EJC’s signature issues and EJC attorneys have recovered over $19 million in unpaid wages and damages on behalf of low-wage workers, the overwhelming majority of whom are unauthorized immigrants. Another prominent example of EJC’s employment legal aid is our representation helping low-wage workers – especially vulnerable undocumented women – take legal action against workplace sexual assault and harassment. Because so many of our employment justice clients are immigrants, EJC has, for over a decade, integrated immigration legal services into our employment justice mission to maximize immigration protections for our clients.
Our Immigration Project currently focuses on a combination of direct representation of immigrants and community activism to protect immigrant families. We provide direct immigration representation on affirmative applications and petitions, including DALE, DACA, advance parole, T visas, U Visas, VAWA, SIJS, and limited family-based petitions, adjustment of status and naturalization. We also conduct community outreach and education regarding DALE, DACA, other immigration protections, and basic immigrant rights.
