Kithara Project was established in 2015 as a 501c3 nonprofit with the mission of improving children’s and young people’s lives and opportunities through music education. The guitar lies at the heart of our work, which consists primarily in the operation of tuition-free, community based classical guitar programs in the Boston area, Albuquerque, and Mexico City. Our students currently range in age from 6 to 21 (and we will soon be introducing elementary music classes for children as young as four). Our students receive weekly group classes, private lessons, and performance and performance attendance opportunities. In each of our program sites we work with a different local community partner: in Albuquerque, a public elementary school; in Boston, a community center and a YMCA; and in Mexico City, a grassroots community organization. Our work sits squarely at the intersection of community building and music pedagogy.
