Community Tax Aid, Inc. - NYC

  • About Us

Community Tax Aid, Inc. (CTA) is a nonprofit community service organization that provides free tax preparation for low-‐income individuals and families in New York City. We are the oldest free tax preparation service in the country.

Extremely complex tax rules, the high price of accountants, and the fear of owing money make it both difficult and scary for low-‐income taxpayers to file their tax returns.

At CTA, we offer training for our volunteers to guide these taxpayers through the filing process, and prepare and file the tax forms for them, all for free. We have locations in four boroughs: Brooklyn, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Queens. We offer CPE credits for CPAs and Volunteer certificates to those who request them.

We are seeking responsible volunteers to assist our multiple locations from February through April. We provide necessary training, and have managers at each location review all tax returns. You can choose the volunteer location and days that are convenient for your schedule. We have opportunities during weekend days and weekday evenings.

    Responsibilities include:

    • interviewing taxpayers

    • data entry

    • assembling returns

    Skills/qualifications

    • good written/oral communication skills

    • previous tax experience is helpful but not required

    • strong attention to detail

    • second language skills a huge plus: Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, ASL

    • positive, flexible, and friendly personality
