The Great Mission Village is a children charity, for children with children. Meaning it supported by children. The Great Mission Village was founded in 2011 with one girl in the Sunday school I was leading who at the age of 9yrs had never been to school. The following Sunday four of them came out openly confessing they too don't go to school and they would like to go to school. At the moment the The Great mission Village is a home of 36 children between the age of 6 yrs and 17. Which 25 of them are girls and 11 boys. The charity also supports eleven(11) children who don't live at the home. The children include; former street boys and girls, the orphaned and the less fortunate in the society. The kids to a lot of activities to have school fees and food on the table. These includes;- dancing and singing gospel music, bead work, designing Masai sandals and making rags and mats. The kids are also great environmentalist. For once every month since October 2013they have a date to go to the streets of Kangemi and the neighborhood for a mass cleanups. This has given birth a project ; TURNING WASTE TO WEALTH. With the motto 'YOUR WASTE OUR FOOD" the project involves collecting all kinds of plastics during our cleanups go with them home and we are trying to boil them to make plastic fencing poles. Using a plastic boiling hopper. The plastic has not picked well due to lack of enough plastic. For what we collect from our cleanups can only make one pole or at times not enough to. For the success of this we need capital to buy more plastics and also people to donate plastics. The charity has many challenges due to lack of market of our stuffs, the high school fee for our seven girls in high school. These leads to lack of enough food to eat ,house rent and children sent home because of school fee. OUR PROJECTS KANGEMI CLEANUP PROJECT The Kangemi Environment Project is a 5years pilot project initiative of the Great Mission Kids to make sure that the environment they live in is clean and managed proper to enhance the better living of the people of Kangemi slum. The kids a heve a date once every month to go out to the streets of kangemi and its enviros for mass cleanup. The great mission kids reach out kids from various schools in kangemi and invite them to the monthly cleanup events. Every month since October 2013 we have over 300 kids attending the cleanup and dozens of youths in a single event. These has resulted to the another project “TURNING WASTE INTO WEALTH” In this project all the plastics we collect from every cleanup we carry them home and the kids are using the plastics to to make decorations ,flowers and the heavy we are trying to make plastic fencing poles. Using a plastic boiling hopper. The plastic has not picked well due to lack of enough plastic. For what we collect from our cleanups can only make one pole or at times not enough to. For the success of this we need capital to buy more plastics and also people to donate plastics. The project has given birth to a zero litter program which we are to launch in school in kangemi slum and other slums if we manage to get the required funds for the campaign. In their campaign we are planning to get to schools and encourage the kids to keep all the plastics and foods stuff remains to us and in return we can reward them with items like exercise books, pens and pencils according to the quantity of their collections. Due to these motivations we can achieve the zero littering from the houses and we can be able to manage the rest. KNITTING PROJECT In great mission village knitting is a very interesting activity that kids do. It’s always amazing how fast they can do and have something done. They always have a great sense of imagination and all they cay imaging is painted down in a rag, mat or carpet. Coming up with a pattern is not a big deal for them. This knitting is also a core activity in the home that kids do at their free time and the items made we have them sold to help support the home. Kids can knit different types of items such as Mats, Rags and Carpets. This comes in a variety of colors and patterns to suit you. BEADWORK PROJECT Beadwork being a game of a few, Great Mission Kids is not left out in this art. Its always unique, funny and amazing how tinny beads are joined and connected to each other with a fishing line to make wonderful and beautiful items. These items include; Sandals decoretions, Bracelets, Bangles, neckleces, earlings and many more in different patterns, shapes and designs which you would like to have one.
