Lower income people often face significant barriers to employment. Getting to work shouldn’t be one of them. Yet, transportation inequity, long commute distances between homes and jobs, and lack of public transportation options are a reality in Massachusetts. Second Chance Cars (SCC) is an innovative program designed to address the critical need for reliable, affordable, and efficient transportation to help lower-income people obtain steady employment, pull themselves out of poverty, improve their quality of life, and break the cycle of poverty.
Our Mission and Objectives
SCC’s mission is to mobilize low-income workforce members, including veterans, returning citizens and single parents, to compete for living wage jobs through affordable car ownership. By providing great and affordable cars, SCC reconciles quality with affordability, eliminates the very likely possibility of a low-income person spending their hard-won dollars on a cheap car that is too expensive to own, and, critically, allows car recipients to compete for the best paying jobs. In addition, SCC car owners engage in a range of financial empowerment activities including budget planning, goal setting and asset building, and improving their often poor credit score by paying off their (guaranteed) 0% interest, $900 car loan for SCC cars that are worth about $6000 on average.
