Backyard Gardeners Network

  • About Us

Backyard Gardeners Network is a Lower 9th Ward based nonprofit organization that uses the cultural tradition of food-growing in the Lower 9th Ward as a platform for community-building, neighborhood revitalization and cultural preservation. We operate two community gardens and a garden resource center in the Lower 9th Ward.

In 2013, we launched a community programming series called Lower 9 Growing Strong last year at the Guerrilla Garden (one of our community garden) in 2009. In the Fall and Spring seasons, Lower 9 Growing Strong provides six afternoons of programming for neighborhood children, adults and seniors that includes food preparation and gardening workshops, children’s activities (art, team-building, literacy, and gardening), community gatherings, potlucks and cooking contests, and Black history and culture events.
