Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County

  • About Us

Our mission statement is simple: to achieve adult literacy in Maricopa County. We teach adults 16 years and older how to read, write, speak English and prepare for the GED. Currently, 1 in 5 residents of Maricopa County are "functionally illiterate," which means they cannot read a newspaper, understand a bus book, or read directions on a prescription bottle. Our goal is not only to teach these adults to read and write, but also to increase their self-confidence, to encourage them to become active, self-motivated learners and to teach them skills that will help them attain their personal goals and improve their economic condition.
