About the Friends of Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge

The Friends of Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge (Friends) is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that exists to support Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge (DFNWR) through our partnership agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Our mission is to preserve, protect, and provide resources for the land and animals therein through equitable and collaborative conservation with the surrounding community. Our activities complement the work of the Fish and Wildlife Service by focusing on the work that the Refuge System can’t do; giving and receiving funding for specific projects and programs, connecting in unique ways with neighbors in the surrounding area, and advocating for America’s Wildlife Refuges locally and nationally.

    About the Refuge

Established in 1909, Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge is one of the oldest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. It is a significant resting and wintering area for migrating birds and protects a wide range of wildlife habitats. DFNWR is located in the greater Boise, ID area known as the Treasure Valley, Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge sits along an urban-rural interface in one of the fastest growing areas in the United States. We are uniquely situated to navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with urbanization.

The Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge serves as an urban oasis for residents across the Treasure Valley, Idaho, and beyond. In 2023, DFNWR applied and was selected to become a Flagship Urban Refuge. They prioritize equitable opportunities to engage with nature through community engagement and welcoming access to public lands. The Friends share their vision to work with their neighbors as co-designers, empowering community members and fostering collaborative conservation solutions that cultivate ecological and economic benefits for fish, wildlife, and people.
