    There are 12,170 (October 2012) students enrolled in fifteen elementary schools (K-5), four middle schools (6-8), two comprehensive high schools (9-12) and one alternative high school. We also have an integrated pre-school program serving 250 students. Over 70 different languages are spoken within the student/parent population. The Newton school district belongs to the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO), a state-funded voluntary educational desegregation program enrolling approximately 3,300 Boston and Springfield students in public schools in 38 participating communities; 404 Boston students are enrolled in our schools. Newton is also a Member of the Education Collaborative for Greater Boston (EDCO) which includes 22 urban and suburban communities.
