Mill Creek was central to Cincinnati’s settlement and development into an economic powerhouse. Unfortunately, the stream suffered from unfettered development over many decades to the point in 1997 when it was declared the “ most endangered urban river in North America” by American Rivers. Fortunately, the story of the intervening 25 years is one of a long-abused stream making an amazing recovery. Today, the water quality and ecology of Mill Creek is vastly improved and the stream is poised to once again become a true amenity to Greater Cincinnati.
The mission of the Alliance is to empower Mill Creek communities to protect and enhance the value of the Mill Creek, its tributaries, and watershed. Through inclusive, meaningful community engagement and collaborative action, the Alliance strives to create a Mill Creek watershed that is a healthy ecosystem where people and communities can thrive.
The Alliance provides comprehensive solutions to many of the problems faced by our constituent communities. Our approach includes:
1. Developing intergovernmental long range planning projects that recover & improve the watershed corridor and support community & economic development (restore habitat, reduce flood damage, stabilize stream banks, solve stormwater challenges, and promote invasive species control)
2. Improving water quality through stream restoration, water quality management and research, reintroduction of native species, and development of public green spaces (edible gardens, trails, and more)
3. Encouraging community engagement with the watershed through recreation and community outreach programs, school programs, volunteer events (clean ups, tree plantings, edible gardens, trail maintenance), and environmental education programs.
4. Transforming the natural and built environment of marginalized communities by offering restoration services.
5. Transforming neglected land and waterways into assets that our neighborhoods need to be healthy and resilient
