  • About Us

Open Primaries, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3)(4) nonprofit organization.

The mission of Open Primaries is to advocate for open and nonpartisan primary election systems, counter efforts to impose closed primaries, educate voters, train and support spokespeople, and participate in the building of local, state and national open primaries coalitions.

Today, 43% of voters-including 50% of millenials and millions of people of color- are independent voters and closed primaries bar them from voting. 26 million Americans were barred from voting in the 2016 primaries alone-one of the most important elections in a generation- and millions more party voters were denied meaningful choices.

Open Primaries believes that no American should be required to join a political party to exercise his or her right to vote. Open Primaries increase voter participation, force politicians to reach out to all the voters in their district and allow Americans--both voters and elected officials--to come together across ideological lines, build new coalitions and legislate productively.
