The Literacy Connection

  • About Us

The Literacy Connection is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping adults acquire fundamental literacy skills by teaching them to read, write, speak and understand English through one-on-one and small group tutoring.

Access to literacy education is important! Over 400,000 adults over age 25 in the State of Illinois alone have less than a ninth-grade education. Low literacy impacts every aspect of life as a result: at-risk for unemployment, low educational attainment, lack of access to proper healthcare, and more. The Literacy Connection trains and organizes volunteers to literally change people's lives!

Founded in 1983 by Gail Borden Public Library staff, The Literacy Connection now serves 16 northwest Chicago suburban communities. Office is located at the main library branch in downtown Elgin and is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
