Syracuse Community Choir

  • About Us

The mission of the Syracuse Community Choir is to provide an opportunity for all people, all ages, to sing music that promotes peace, freedom, and justice, addresses issues of oppression like ableism, racism, sexism, and homophobia, and provides inspiration for changing the world. We educate each other and the Greater Syracuse community about social, political, and environmental issues. We seek to build a safe and inclusive community, and to love each other and the earth well.

We are an intergenerational group of singers from many backgrounds and abilities who believe all people can sing and every voice matters. There are no auditions for our choir. We have a special commitment to accessibility and dismantling barriers to participation. We offer transportation, childcare, extra help, brailed and large print words, rehearsal cds, and more. We believe building connection and understanding is as important as the songs we sing. To that end, we provide support, encouragement, and training to members.

We also provide moments of sounding good! There are several public components to our programs: those who are singing in one of our three choirs (adults, teens/young adults, and children) and those who come to our events. We provide inspiration and a space where art and community combine. Even in our concerts, we encourage the audience to sing, to greet each other, and to be a part of the processional. We organize creative spaces (three rehearsals per week) and two bigger concerts each year, as well as additional smaller events.
